Biological Activity

Description	Sodium benzoate (Benzoic acid sodium salt) is a preservative and uesd as a food additive which is bacteriostatic and fungistatic under acidic conditions.
In vitro	Sodium benzoate causes chromosome aberrations in Chinese hamster fibroblast cell line^[2].
In vivo	The performance of the NaB(Sodium benzoate)-treated rats is impaired in the elevated plus maze, an indicator of anxiety. Their riding time in fixed and accelerating speed rotarods is decreased, indicating motor impairment^[1].

The human lymphocyte cultures are incubated in 5% CO2 incubator at 37°C. The concentrations of sodium benzoate are 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mg/mL and the incubation times for treating lymphocytes are 24 and 48 hrs, respectively, for micronucleus test and chromosome study in this study. For micronucleus test, micronuclei preparation is performed. For chromosome study, standard human lymphocyte culture for chromosome study is performed and stained the chromosomes with Giemsa. Micronuclei and chromosome breakage are observed under microscope.
