It is a natural antioxidant. |

In vitro | Lycopene is found in nature in the all-trans form; however, thermal processing, as well as intestinal digestion, of raw tomato products facilitates its cis-isomerization[3]. Lycopene is recognized to be the most efficient singlet oxygen quencher among biological carotenoids. Antioxidant functions are associated with lowering DNA damage, malignant transformation, and reducing biological oxidative damage of proteins, lipids, and other cell components in vitro. Lycopene has also been found to increase gap-junctional communication between cells and to induce the synthesis of connexin-43[1]. It negatively affects cancer cells or development of cancer by modulating cell cycle progression and cell proliferation and has an inhibitory effect on DNA synthesis, initiating up-regulation of gap-junction proteins and a reduction of local androgen signaling, impact IGIF-1 signaling, antioxidant activity and induction of apoptotic cell death[2]. |
In vivo | Lycopene has been reported to increase the survival rate of mice exposed to X-ray radiation. Lycopene has been reported to increase the survival rate of mice exposed to X-ray radiation. It is found that the consumption of lycopene in fruits and vegetables may reduce the likelihood of developing heart disease. Lycopene prevents oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and reduces the risk of developing atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. Lycopene is as effective as β-carotene in inhibiting the growth of the glioma cells in the model of glioma cells transplanted in rats[1]. Lycopene acts as an antioxidant agent both through a decrease in intracellular reactive species production in vitro and in vivo through the neutralization of reactive species, the restoration of the GSH/GSSG ratio, decrease in oxidatively generated damage and decrease in proinflammatory cytokines through decreased cell influx as well as direct suppression of cytokine production[3]. |
