Biological Activity

Description L-Cystine is the oxidized dimer form of the amino acid L-cysteine which is a non-essential amino acid of the human body. It is required for wound healing and formation of epithelial tissue.
In vitro
In vitro L-cysteine can enhance proliferation and differentiation of NSCs via the CBS/H2S pathway[1].
Cell Research Cell lines Neural stem cells (NSCs)
Concentrations 0.1, 0.5, 1, 5, 10 and 50 μM
Incubation Time 24 and 48 h
Method NSCs are seeded at 96-well plates and then treated with the indicated concentrations of L-cysteine (L-cys) for 24 and 48 h in reduced growth medium. NSCs proliferation is measured by MTT analysis.
In Vivo
In vivo L-Cysteine dose-dependently decreases food intake in both rats and mice following oral gavage and intraperitoneal administration. L-Cysteine increases neuronal activation in the area postrema and delayed gastric emptying. It suppresses plasma acyl ghrelin levels and does not reduce food intake in transgenic ghrelin-overexpressing mice. Repeated L-cysteine administration decreases food intake in rats and obese mice. L-Cysteine reduces hunger and plasma acyl ghrelin levels in humans[2].
