Description 4-Methylbenzylidene camphor (Enzacamene, 4-MBC) is an organic camphor derivative that is used in the cosmetic industry for its ability to protect the skin against UV, specifically UV B radiation.
In Vivo
In vivo Though 4MBC is weakly estrogenic in the reproductive system of fishes and rodents it shows strong anti-osteoporotic effects comparable to E2 after chronic application. 4MBC is resorbed through the skin after dermal administration resulting in identical biotransformation of this UV filter in humans and rats. 4MBC is a potent inhibitor of the pituitary-thyroid-axis[1]. 4-MBC prevents bone loss and exerted a very weak estrogenic effect on the uterus and the vagina after a 3-month treatment of Ovx rats. 4-MBC exerts a positive effect on the mitochondria and microstructure of the skeletal muscle during the early stage of osteoporotic fracture healing[2].
